INTRODUCTION

Energy drinks are defined as beverages that include high concentrations of caffeine as well as other legal stimulants including taurine, carbs, glucuronolactone, inositol, niacin, panthenol, and other B-complex vitamins. These substances are regarded as sources of energy (Acheson, 2022). It has been shown that young individuals make up the highest portion of users of easily accessible energy drinks. This trend has led to a rise in the consumption of energy drinks overall. The first known instance of an energy drink occurred in 1987, when Red Bull was sold for the first time in Austria. After being brought to the attention of people in the United States in the 1990s, it began to enjoy greater levels of popularity. Since that time, the number of people purchasing this beverage has skyrocketed. The market for energy drinks expanded by eighty percent in 2006. (Adeleke., 2022). This is due to the fact that the producers of the beverages claim that their products may increase levels of energy and physical endurance, as well as enhance focus and response time (Alghamdi, 2022).

The Nigerian market has seen the introduction of a variety of various energy drinks over the course of the last few years. These beverages are used either to offer an energy boost or as nutritional supplements. These beverages have a dedicated target audience that consists of children and young adults. A wide variety of applications have been found for these goods. A survey was carried out among college students, and the results showed that 67% of students admitted to using energy drinks as a means of coping with insufficient sleep, 65% mentioned increasing energy, and 54% use it for fun at parties; 50% for studying or completing a major course project; 45% used it while driving a car for a long period of time; and 17% for treating hangovers (Malinauskas et al., 2007). These products have also been used to counteract the intoxicating effects of alcohol, and even to raise one's social standing (Al-Mayalyr, 2021).

The vast majority of energy drinks are marketed as nutraceutical foods, implying that they improve one's health, energy levels, or have other desirable properties. There is some worry among specialists in the health care industry that these drinks, as well as the drinking behaviors of the customers who are intended to purchase them, may in fact have unfavorable effects on health. Insomnia, anxiousness, headaches, and tachycardia are the four negative effects that have been reported by patients the most often (Appleton., 2022). According to a recent research (Aschner, 2020), excessive intake of energy drinks was linked to the development of new-onset seizures in four patients as well as the hospitalization of persons who already suffered from a mental condition (Aschner., 2020).
